Tired of call drops? This may be the reason behind it

Random

call drops

are annoying. No escaping them and certainly not a new issue for users. For several years now, we’ve been facing this issue and while the

telecom service providers

have improved their overall infrastructure, more towers have been installed, the call drop situation is still one of the main complaints among users.
And, things have gone from bad to worse in the past year.

So, why suddenly call drops have increased significantly?

5G

may be the reason behind it. Before you panic and stop using 5G services, let us explain the entire situation.
5G is a fairly new network technology which both Reliance Jio and Airtel have started offering in the country. The service comes with tons of benefits like faster internet speeds, low latency and even unlocks various other implementations.

But, there’s a big problem –

connectivity range

.
5G bands are short range and this can be the reason behind call drops
mmWave and sub-6GHz are two main bands for 5G networks across the globe. The sub-6GHz is relatively long-range compared to mmWave. However, it is still not as long range as the 4G bands.
Which brings us to the problem – the connectivity range. Now, Airtel and Reliance Jio have offered several 5G towers across the country or at least in the regions where the 5G services are available.

Still, the 5G network keeps fluctuating when moving around in a particular region or from one region to another. So, when the 5G signal strength drops the phone automatically jumps to the

4G networks

and if you happen to be on a call during that switching period, the phone loses the signal for a fraction of seconds and that’s good enough time for call drops or calls going mute all of sudden, etc.
Now, this is for sure a temporary situation and things will improve as more 5G networks and towers will get installed in our surroundings. For now, you can try to keep your phone on the 4G network. This will not only make things better in terms of calling, but will also help you improve the battery life of your phone to an extent.
