Times Square New Year’s Eve street closures for ball drop

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – It’s almost time for the iconic Times Square News Year’s Eve ball drop, an event that marks both the closing of the year and the closing of many streets in Manhattan.

The New York Police Department will stop the flow of traffic in Times Square from 4 a.m. on Tues. Dec. 31. The closures will expand later in the morning around 11 a.m.

At 4 p.m. multiple avenues will also close to pedestrians. Viewing areas for the ball drop will close throughout the day as they fill with revelers. 

Here is a list of all of the expected street closures and when they begin.

Times Square New Year's Eve street closures

Beginning at 4 a.m.

  • West 42nd to West 49th Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway
  • West 43rd to West 48th Street between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue

Beginning at 11 a.m.

  • West 37th to West 57th Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway
  • West 37th to West 56th Street between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue

Beginning at 4 p.m.

  • Eighth Avenue and Sixth Avenue close to pedestrians and vehicles
  • If you need to cross from the west side of Eight Avenue to the east side, or from the east side of Sixth Avenue to the west side, there will be pedestrian crossings at 41st, 44th, 50th, 54th, and 57th Streets.

Pedestrian access points to enter viewing areas:

  • 49th from Sixth and Eighth Avenues
  • 52nd from Sixth and Eighth Avenues
  • 56th from Sixth and Eighth Avenues
