NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Crowds gathered in the streets of New York City Monday afternoon to witness an extraordinary celestial event — a solar eclipse.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon lines up between the sun and the Earth, blocking part or all of the face of the sun and darkening the sky.

Missed the solar eclipse? Here’s your next chance to see totality

New York City wasn't in the path of totality, so it didn't experience a total solar eclipse. But the city did see close to 90% of the sun covered by the moon.

A one-minute time-lapse video captured the solar eclipse as seen from The Battery in Lower Manhattan.
