MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Strong winds and heavy thunderstorms caused widespread outages in New York City and Westchester County, leaving over 35,000 residents without power over the past two days.
Con Edison reported around 12,400 customers were still without power at 11 a.m. Thursday, more than 4,000 of those were in the Wakefield section of the Bronx. PSE&G reported 372 power outages on Long Island as of 10:00 a.m.
Crews were assessing damage and making necessary repairs. Customers can check the Con Edison outage map for estimated restoration times.
Authorities urged residents to stay away from and report downed electrical wires. If a power line falls on your vehicle while you're inside, stay inside the car and wait for emergency personnel.
Customers should disconnect appliances that may turn on automatically when power is restored to avoid circuit overloads.
