Apple
launched the
iPhone 15 series
in September 2023. This lineup included four models -- iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple added a
tetra-prism telephoto lens
to the iPhone 15 Pro Max model that offers 5x optical zoom. Now, the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning to add the premium camera feature to more models.
According to a report by TrendForce, Apple is rumored to add the tetra-prism telephoto lens to both
iPhone 16 Pro
and
iPhone 16 Pro Max
models. Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the only model that comes with the tetra-prism lens, which helps increase the optical zoom range of the telephoto lens from 3x to 5x.
However, the iPhone 15 Pro missed out on this lens while the iPhone 16 Pro may join the Pro Max in using the camera component. The report claims that camera specification upgrades are continuing to drive device upgrades among consumers.
How this camera upgrade may help Apple
The tetra-prism telephoto lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max was well received. Industry sources also expect that there will be an increase in the use of
periscopic lens modules
in upcoming smartphones
For Apple specifically, the report notes that the camera technology will spread from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the iPhone 16 Pro, making it a feature for the entire Pro series.
Earlier, in September, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that both iPhone 16 Pro models will use the same tetra-prism lens. other reports have also corroborated the rumor.
The use of Tetraprism by Apple may influence the rest of the market. However, cost considerations may cause Android smartphone vendors to more segment their offerings.
For mid-range devices, a cost-effective fixed-focus or single-fold periscope system is expected to become popular. High-end clustering inner-focus modules or similar complex versions are also anticipated to arrive for high-end modules.
