These streets could get 20 MPH speed limit first thanks to Sammy’s Law: DOT

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – After the passage of Sammy's Law, the Department of Transportation released its initial list of streets that could see their speed limits reduced to 20 miles per hour.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed off on Sammy’s Law in April, which allows New York City to lower its speed limit to 20 mph from 25 mph.

What are NYC’s deadliest neighborhoods for pedestrians?

Now, the Department of Transportation is ready to start the process. Its expecting to reduce speed limits in 250 locations by the end of next year, according to DOT officials.

The public will have time to comment on the proposed streets below before speed limit changes start in September.

In addition to selected streets, each borough will have one Regional Slow Zone, a geographic area with a reduced speed limit. The first Regional Slow Zone in consideration is lower Manhattan south of Canal Street, which could see its speed limit reduced by the end of 2024, DOT officials said.

In some areas, the speed limit will go down to 10 mph during safety-related redesigns. The limit will also drop to 10 mph on Shared and Open Streets with substantial design upgrades, officials said Thursday.

Sammy's Law was named after 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein, who was killed in Park Slope by a speeding car in 2012. It was passed as part of the state budget.

"Speeding ruins lives, and reducing vehicle speeds by even a few mph could be the difference between life or death in a traffic crash,” said DOT Commissioner Rodriguez.
