A small but consistent share of
iPhone buyers
reportedly switch from
Android
phones. An earlier report claimed that these customers tend to be more male and have lower incomes than existing iPhone owners. According to a new report by CIRP, Android users who switch to iPhones often start with older and more affordable
iPhone models
. The report also notes that a significant share of these users also start with the Pro and Pro Max models.
Popular iPhone models among Android switchers
As per the report, 29% of
Android switchers
bought the
legacy SE
, 12, or 13 models (including the base
iPhone 13
and iPhone 13 mini models) in 2023.
The report also claims that Android switchers were less likely to buy Phone 14 models, including 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max, which were the newest generation phones for three-fourths of the year. A slightly smaller percentage of Android switchers than iPhone owners bought the latest
iPhone 15
models, iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max.
The report also notes that Android owners were not as drawn to the premium models, however, a significant percent bought them. The report analysed Pro and Pro Max purchases for both the
iPhone 14
and 15 in 2023. 37% of Android switchers bought one of these premium models, compared to 43% of iPhone owners, the report adds
Overall customers that switch from Android tend to start with less expensive iPhones. The report concludes that a large percentage of Android switchers are coming from less expensive Android phones. The older iPhone models may be a better match for their smartphone budgets and Android switchers exploring the iOS universe may not feel the need to get the latest and most powerful iPhone with the newest features. The report notes that entering the walled garden, using iMessage and Facetime, and the ability to pair their phone with Airpods is good enough of an upgrade.
