Elon Musk has been at odds with
OpenAI
and its team. He recently filed a lawsuit against the
ChatGPT
maker alleging that the company has deviated from its original mission of being a non-profit and developing AI tools for humanity to a money-making source for
Microsoft
. In the latest offensive against the organisation, Musk has shared an image on his X handle implying how the company changed under the new leadership.
Musk shared a popular image of a butterfly driving a car. The original image shows that the insect is caught by a police officer who is checking its ID, which shows an image of a ‘caterpillar’. The butterfly explains to the cop that this is an “old picture” on the ID – implying that it got the photo clicked when it was in the 'caterpillar' form and what he is seeing is an evolved version.
Musk used the same image, where he imposed the name “Closed AI” on butterfly’s face and “OpenAI” on the ID – suggesting that the now Microsoft-backed company has ‘evolved’ from a non-profit company to a for-profit company.
OpenAI’s reply on Musk’s lawsuit
Musk’s post comes a few hours after OpenAI used his old emails to prove that Musk himself wanted to make the company for profit.
“We realised building AGI will require far more resources than we’d initially imagined. Elon said we should announce an initial $1 billion funding commitment to OpenAI,” OpenAI said.
“In late 2017, we and Elon decided the next step for the mission was to create a for-profit entity. Elon wanted majority equity, initial board control, and to be CEO. In the middle of these discussions, he withheld funding,” OpenAI alleged.
As per OpenAI, the company and Musk couldn’t reach an agreement on terms for a for-profit entity. The ChatGPT maker also said that Musk wanted to have the control of the board and even offered to merge OpenAI with Tesla – his EV making company.
