The Last of Us Part II
was originally released almost four years ago, in 2020, on
PlayStation 4
. Then, in 2021, a free upgrade was made available for the
PlayStation 5
owners, allowing them to play a modified version of the original PS4 game. Later, a drama series based on the game was released and sparked a new interest in people for the story of
Ellie
and
Joel
to a wider audience.
Now, cashing on the same, we have
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
, which is an updated version of the updated version of the original game.
The sequel takes place five years later, the same as the 2020 sequel, with Ellie as the main focus, and Abby is introduced, making for another intense journey. The remaster brings smoother movements, brighter lighting, and more lifelike scenic detail. However, you will need a high-end display to notice these changes.
The Dual Sense controller is being fully made use of, providing a tangible difference in feel between various weapons during combat. The controller's touchpad can be used to swipe guitar strings, and there's a guitar mode that lets you strum Joel's old guitar freely.
The story follows the same trajectory as the original game, but the remaster introduces a new mode called No Return, where you need to survive multiple enemy attack waves by choosing different paths through procedurally generated stages. What’s more is that you now play as different characters, such as Dina and Tommy, for the first time, and gameplay is different for each of them.
If you have played The Last of Us Part II before, then the Lost Levels will intrigue you. It features three playable stages that were cut from the original release, including a build-up to the Jackson Party, an extended section in the Seattle sewers, and a late-game scene where Ellie hunts a wild boar. These also provide more insight into the world and Ellie's character through audio commentary from developers on the ideas they were exploring and why they were ultimately abandoned.
What might bug you if you have played the original game that the Director's commentary only unlocks after completing the story once, Though one can transfer their saved files from the original game can bypass this.
Currently, we have only played for a few hours. Stay tuned for our full review as we delve deeper into Joel and Ellie's story.
