QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) – Two teenage boys stabbed at a local high school in Queens on Thursday face up to 15 years in prison, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Saturday.
The teens, both 17 years old, took part in a brawl at Van Buren High School located in Queens Village. The defendants are both facing charges of gang assault, for assaulting another student.
“As detailed in the complaint, this was a vicious attack,” Katz said in a statement. “The brutality was chilling under any circumstance, but that it occurred in what parents should be able to assume is a safe place for their children is as unsettling as the violence captured on video. We will not allow the critical role public schools play in the life of our city to be brazenly and violently jeopardized."
According to court documents, one teen punched the victim in the face and body, tackled him, and slammed him into a metal door inside the school. Both boys, along with four others who have not been caught also kicked, stomped, and punched the victim multiple times while the victim was on the floor, according to video evidence.
One of the teens also stomped on the victim’s head with his foot, according to documents.
One of the boys had a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol in his possession. The pistol was loaded with a round and police also recovered a magazine loaded with seven other rounds.
Police are still trying to determine how the two teens stabbed each other during the brawl.
The intended target suffered bruising to his face and eye, the full extent of his injuries has not been determined; officials said.
