FLUSHING, Queens (PIX11) – A pair of hawk-eyed police from the NYPD helped save a 14-year-old’s life on Wednesday.
Officer Ariasmercedes and Sergeant Newman were standing on a subway platform when they spotted a 14-year-old boy surfing on top of a 7 train at the Mets-Willets Point station in Queens, according to a social media post from the department.
Sergeant Newman immediately began coordinating with the train crew and New York City commuters to find the teen.
With help from witnesses on the 7 train, Officer Ariasmercedes and Sergeant Newman were able to apprehend the 14-year-old and prevent a potential tragedy.
Six people have died surfing subway on trains last year, up from five in 2023. Arrests of subway surfers also rose to 229 last year, up from 135 the year before, according to police data.
