Amid heavy rains, the Tamil Nadu state government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges today, December 18. As per the information, the state government has declared a holiday in four districts; Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi.

On Sunday, the state received heavy rainfall, and a red alert was sounded in those four districts. Further, several trains were either fully cancelled or partially cancelled as the floodwater entered train yards and submerged rail tracks.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Thiruchendur in Tuticorin district recorded a whopping 606 mm of rainfall till 1:30 am on Monday. Since Saturday (December 16), light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in most places of southern Tamil Nadu.

Collectors of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi have urged people to stay away from the Tamirabharani River as water discharge has gone up due to the increase in inflow. Water levels in other reservoirs have also gone up.
