CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu legislative assembly will meet for nine days from June 20 to debate on the
demand for grants
for 48 departments, according to
speaker M Appavu
.
The decision to this effect was taken at the business advisory committee represented by all parties.
AIADMK
expressed its strong opposition to the decision on holding the session for a short duration.
Appavu said the session had been curtailed due to the bypoll to Vikravandi assembly constituency on July 10, which was ‘delayed deliberately.” The bypoll was necessitated by the death of DMK MLA N Pugazhenthi in April. The bypoll could have been conducted along with the general election which lasted till June, according to him.
“The assembly will be adjourned on day one after paying tributes to the former MLAs and Pugazhenthi. The rest of the session will have 16 sittings to debate on demand for grants for each department in the morning as well as evening,” Appavu said.
The Assembly Rules Committee idecided to commence the session at 9.30am on all days. The evening session will begin at 5pm.
Former AIADMK minister S P Velumani, a member of the committee, objected to the decision to curtail the session. “The DMK made a poll promise to have an assembly for 100 days a year but is now holding for eight days. They did not even heed to AIADMK’s demand to continue the session after the bypoll,” the former minister said.
Appavu claimed that AIADMK govt had held an assembly session for six days after the general election in 2004.
