Take a 1917 subway to NY Yankees’ opening day

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The train you take to the Yankees' opening day could be older than Yankee Stadium itself.

Nostalgia trains – including a 1917 train and the famed 1960s Train of Many Colors – will run to the stadium Friday for the Yankees’ opening game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Both trains will pick up fans at the 42nd Street–Grand Central 4 train platform around 11 a.m. Friday, arriving at 161st Street-Yankee Stadium in about 25 minutes. 

The 1917 train will take off first – it’s a low-voltage train that used to run on the Interborough Rapid Transit system, complete with rattan seats, paddle fans, window-mounted destination signs and incandescent light bulbs. 

“Fans would have taken subway cars like these to see Babe Ruth lead the Yankees to their first World Series victory, over the NY Giants in 1923. The last of the Standard Lo-Vs were phased out in the 1960s - 19 World Series championships later,” representatives of the New York Transit Museum said.

Moments later, the museum’s Train of Many Colors will depart with a second round of fans. Known for its different colored cars, including red, green, robin’s egg blue and cream, the train spans many eras of train history back to the 1960s.

“The train represents several different eras in New York City subway history and may be the train of your youth,” museum representatives said. 

The old-school trains ride to Yankees stadium once a season. 

"Two things I learned very quickly are that New Yorkers are passionate about their Yankees and they know the subway is the best way to get to the game,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey.

If you’re looking for a more updated ride, the Metro-North “Yankee Clipper” will provide game-day rides from Harlem and New Haven to the stadium and shuttles from Manhattan.
