NEW DELHI: As the
T20 World Cup
2024 approaches, Team India is set to embark on their campaign with the aim of ending a major
ICC trophy drought
. The tournament, hosted by the USA and West Indies, kicks off on June 1, with India striving to win their second T20 world title, their first having come in 2007.
Despite promising performances, the team has faced disappointing exits in recent editions, bowing out in the league stage in 2021 and in the semi-finals in 2022.
Ahead of the event, former England cricketer
David Lloyd
has stirred controversy with his comments about India's prospects. Speaking to talkSPORT, Lloyd described India as a "predictable team" that wouldn't pose a significant threat in the tournament.
"(It is) quite a predictable team. The shackles are not off," Lloyd remarked. "I would think the opposition would accept the quality.. Yeah, good players. But they ain't taking a risk with bat or ball. So, you'd think of them as 'yeah, they will have their moments,' but they wouldn't be really threatening," he added.
India will begin their preparations with a warm-up match against Bangladesh in the USA on June 1. The venue and timing for this match are yet to be announced. The ICC has scheduled warm-up games from May 27 to June 1 across the USA and Trinidad and Tobago, with 17 of the 20 participating teams involved.
These matches will not have T20I status, allowing teams to field all members of their 15-player squads. Teams can opt to play up to two warm-up matches, depending on their arrival schedule.
