THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A suspect was arrested in the Bronx subway shooting that killed one person and injured five others on Monday, according to law enforcement sources.
The suspect is a minor and has not been charged yet, according to a police source.
An innocent bystander was killed in what authorities believe was a gang-related shooting that started about 4:35 p.m. on the northbound No. 4 train platform at the Mount Eden Avenue subway station, police officials said.
Two groups described as teenagers were fighting on the subway as it pulled into the Mount Eden Avenue station before it spilled onto the platform and street, according to Chief of Transit Michael Kemper and NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
In total, three shooters fired 19 shots, police said.
“You can imagine a chaotic scene, you have a crowded train pulling onto a crowded platform, one shot being fired, now everybody’s trying to scramble to get off the platform,” Kenny said.
Obed Beltran-Sanchez, a 35-year-old homeless man, was fatally shot and five other people ranging from 14 to 71 years old were injured, according to the NYPD.
The other victims who were shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including a 29-year-old woman who was struck in the face and neck, Kenny said.
