Film producer and
Prithviraj Sukumaran
’s wife
Supriya Menon
, recently spoke about the importance of creating awareness about menstruation and changes that happen during puberty amongst young girls and boys. She recalled menstruating for the first time, and not knowing what was happening. The ‘
Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil
’ producer also spoke about the Menstrupedia comic book, which has helped her to explain menstruation to her daughter
Alankrita
, aka Ally.
In a note shared on Instagram, Supriya Menon said, “When I got my
periods
for the first time I thought I was dying of some horrible disease since I wasn’t aware of menstruation & the changes that came with it!”
She further added, “I wanted to make sure Ally isn’t caught unaware on the same or subject to half baked information from her peers. Puberty and the changes that come with it are tricky topics to tackle with small children. I was unsure on how to speak about the same with Ally. This book has helped me tremendously to explain the concept of periods and demystify menstruation to her.”
She also dropped a glimpse of another book, which is an easy guide for boys to understand puberty and the changes, “I understand there is a similar book for boys but I haven’t explored the same. I have added the picture for the boys book. Let’s talk about periods and normalise the same for our kids! #Periods#menstruation #hygiene#growingup.”
