Supreme Court judge refuses to hear to senior lawyers during vacation

Supreme Court Justice Vikram Nath, who is in charge of the court’s vacation bench, has decided not to let senior lawyers argue cases during the court’s vacation time. He made this clear again during Monday’s session.

Justice Nath reminded everyone that he made this rule last year and it still stands. "Senior lawyers are not allowed to argue in my court. Last year I made it very clear no senior lawyers to argue during vacations," he said.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was present and asked his junior lawyer to argue instead. Singhvi commented that he wished all courts had the same rule.

Justice Nath responded, "I’m the master of my court. I can’t control other courts."

When both sides had senior lawyers, Justice Nath asked them to let their junior colleagues argue. “Both of you take your seats and let your colleague argue,” he told the senior lawyers.

He also joked with the junior lawyers, telling them not to pay the senior lawyers for the hearing. “Don’t give fees to seniors, alright. If you have given, take it back,” he said.

Justice Nath’s rule aims to give junior lawyers more chances to gain experience during vacation hearings.
