NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders star
Sunil Narine
has become the third cricketer to reach the milestone of 550 or more wickets in men's T20 cricket. He achieved this feat during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Dwayne Bravo
, another West Indies allrounder, leads the list with 625 wickets, followed by Afghan cricketer
Rashid Khan
with 574 wickets.
Narine's performance against MI was impressive, taking one wicket in his three-over spell while conceding only 21 runs. He dismissed
Ishan Kishan
in the 7th over. Throughout IPL 2024, the 35-year-old has claimed 15 wickets at an economy rate of 6.73 in 12 matches.
The match on Saturday was affected by rain, resulting in a reduced game of 16 overs per side. MI won the toss and chose to field first. KKR lost their openers Phil Salt and Sunil Narine early, but valuable contributions from Venkatesh Iyer (42), Nitish Rana (33),
Andre Russell
(24), and Rinku Singh (20) helped them reach a total of 157/7 in their allotted overs. Piyush Chawla (2/28) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/39) were the standout bowlers for MI.
In response, MI's opening pair of Ishan Kishan (40) and Rohit Sharma (19) got off to a solid start with a 65-run partnership. However, KKR managed to restrict the flow of runs and take wickets at crucial moments.
Despite the efforts of Tilak Varma (32) and Naman Dhir (17), MI fell short by 18 runs, finishing at 139/8 in their 16 overs. Varun Chakravarthy (2/17) was the most effective bowler for KKR, while Andre Russell and Harshit Rana (2/34) also contributed with the ball.
