Sunil Kedar’s disqualification from Maharashtra assembly: Congress says its clear discrimination

NAGPUR: After Saoner MLAs disqualification, Congress leaders slammed the BJP for applying discriminatory tactics against the

opposition leaders

and also questioned the government and the legislature on why the same rules and regulations were not made applicable to the elected representative from the BJP and its allies.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee

(MPCC) president Nana Patole asked why the same laws were not made applicable to BJP MP from Gujarat Naranbhai Kachhadia, who was sentenced to three years imprisonment by a court in Amreli for assaulting a doctor at a government hospital in 2013.

“He was allowed to move to the high court and Supreme Court and granted all the time. Similarly, its MLA who was convicted for the rape case, was not disqualified for many days. We just want to ask why this haste shown in Kedar’s case? It was just a lower court which sentenced him for five years behind bars. He should have been allowed to at least move to the higher judiciary for justice,” he said.
Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said the party respects the court’s Verdict and law, but why the same laws were not made applicable to the BJP’s elected representatives and others.

“Why should there be separate

justice for law

for the BJP and its allies? When our senior leader Rahul Gandhi was convicted in a criminal defamation case, he was immediately disqualified, before being reinstated by the Supreme Court. BJP's MLA from Muzzafar Nagar was convicted as well, but the same laws were not applied. It is very unfair that the same laws are not applied for the BJP leaders. Those in the power must think about these lacunae in the parliamentary process,” he said.

Endorsing his views, former city MP and minister in the UPA regime Vilas Muttemwar slammed the

BJP for discrimination

meted out to the opposition leaders. “Though Kedar was disqualified as an MLA as per the Constitution, there is a clear discrimination between opposition and BJP’s elected representatives by the government. Once those facing criminal charges join the saffron party’s washing machine, they come out clean. As per the government, only the opposition leaders are involved in all the terrorism, corruption, frauds and other criminal cases while the BJP leaders are a symbol of honesty, integrity and dedication. They are misusing the agencies like ED and CBI. In the last ten years, everyone has witnessed their misgovernance, the people would teach them a befitting lesson,” he said.
