KOLKATA: A 51-year-old

slit the throat of his wife and tried to

his teenaged daughter before hanging himself at his residence at Narayanpur in Rajarhat on Monday.
The police said it looked like a case of

suicide pact

as the suicide note-written by Rupa Mukherjee, the wife-was purportedly signed by all three victims after they begun contemplating taking the extreme step since Friday night.

Cops stated that rising debt had been blamed for such a move. Police sources confirmed that the family members had consumed sleeping pills on Monday morning but failed in their mission, forcing the trader to choose a more violent end. The 15-year-old daughter, though, has survived and cops have spoken to her at the private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Doctors said she could not be declared completely out of danger before 48 hours.
According to police sources, Sagar Mukherjee lived in a two-BHK ground-floor flat located inside a complex at Narayanpur. His family included Rupa (45) and their daughter, a Class X student. They had shifted here about six years ago.
"The initial probe shows Sagar had entered a business with his uncle and faced heavy losses that had forced him to sell part of his ancestral property. At present, he ran a medical store at Narayanpur Market. He seemed to have again incurred losses and was looking to sell off their flat," said a police officer.

On Saturday around 8.30 am, the watchman saw Sagar come out of the flat. One of the employees of Sagar had called him around 11.45 am and received a response . However, a little later, someone came visiting the house and rang the doorbell. When he did not receive a response, he tried to ask around. It was after sometime that the teenage daughter, with a deep cut on her throat, opened the door. Her mother was lying dead. Sagar was hanging from the ceiling. "We have recovered the rope and weapons used in the incident. The suicide note talks of financial issues. We will ascertain if there was any external pressure. Things will get clearer once the post-mortem is completed," said Bidhannagar commissioner Gaurav Sharma.
