NEW YORK (PIX11) – Straphangers are concerned for their safety after the NYPD responded to several high-profile crimes on subways last week, including an MTA conductor who was slashed while working on a C train.
Subway crime is on the rise, according to data from the NYPD.
A 64-year-old man was kicked onto the tracks of the A, C and E lines on Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.
A slashing at Penn Station is also being investigated as a hate crime, police said. The suspect allegedly made anti-gay comments to a passenger on a northbound A train before slashing him with a box cutter, according to authorities.
A 61-year-old man was also sent to the hospital after being stabbed in the stomach on a Manhattan-bound No. 4 train in the Bronx, police said.
The MTA conductor who was slashed told PIX11 News that he's been on the job for over 20 years and said for the first time at work, he was fearing for his life and thought he was going to die.
The MTA said it's doing everything it can to keep passengers and employees safe.
While murder and rape are down in the subways compared to this time last year, other crimes, like robbery, rose 8.9% while felony assault saw an 11.7% spike, NYPD data showed.
