NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The rising cost of rent and living is a huge burden for New York City college students.
One college student from Harlem is a star on the basketball court and in the classroom. He’s sharing his story of housing insecurity, hoping to inspire other college students to reach out for help.
Arthur Dukes, 22, was born in Harlem, lives in the Bronx, and is a sophomore here at LaGuardia Community College. He’s unstoppable on the court, as he is in life. Dukes is the team captain of the Red Hawks. According to his coach, Jarrett Lockhart, he’s an exceptional point guard and an incredible mentor and leader to his teammates and classmates.
Dukes comes from a big family. He is one of 13. He is also the No. 1 scorer in the CUNY system and in the country for Division III Junior College basketball.
It’s hard to believe, but Dukes was also homeless just four months ago. Dukes was evicted from his apartment in the Bronx in September and needed a new place to live. He confided in his coach about his struggle.
Now, Dukes has a temporary place to live thanks to a partnership between Airbnb and Laguardia Community College.
His biggest fan is Dr. Rhonda Mouton, the director of LaGuardia Care, a program at the college that helps students get the resources they need.
