GURGAON: Traffic police issued 1,493
online challans
amounting to Rs 29.8 lakh for speeding beyond 120kmph on the Gurgaon stretch of
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
last December, the month that 80 cameras were made operational on the route.
DCP (traffic) Virender Vij said on Friday that 80 cameras were installed at 16 locations over the 78km portion of the expressway.
These were integrated with Gurgaon police control room.
"The cameras alert the control room when they detect any vehicle moving beyond the speed limit of 120kmph. Like that, automatic speed challans are issued. We urge people to follow the norms," he said.
TOI earlier reported about high-end cars and sports cars the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes, Porsche, BMW and Rolls-Royce testing their horsepower on the eight-lane expressway. It was estimated that around 500 vehicles broke the maximum speed limit on the expressway every day, and among them were high-end cars spotted driving at 200kmph or more.
The 246km Sohna-Dausa stretch of the expressway was inaugurated in February 2023, but it was only after two accidents involving high-end cars were reported that focus shifted to the problem.
On August 22 last year, a Rolls-Royce that broke away from a 20-car convoy crashed into the back of a fuel tanker on the expressway in Nuh, killing the driver and co-driver of the tanker. Two weeks later, on September 5, a Mercedes collided with a milk tanker on the same expressway section. The Mercedes driver succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. In both these cases, the Rolls-Royce and Mercedes were racing at speeds more than 200kmph.
