Speeding driver charged in deadly Staten Island crash

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) --- Authorities arrested a driver who allegedly ran off after his passenger was killed in a Staten Island wreck earlier this week, police said.

Ahmad Omar, 25, was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal collision and tampering with physical evidence in Monday's crash, according to the NYPD. Omar pleaded not guilty and was released without bail at his arraignment, accoridng to court records.

Omar was allegedly speeding in a black BMW when he lost control and crashed near Goethals Road and Jules Drive in Graniteville at around 11:15 p.m., police said. The car hit fences, a utility pole, and a fire hydrant before spinning out, police said.

The rear passenger, Usman Chugahtai, 26, was ejected through the back windshield and died at the scene, according to the NYPD. A 23-year-old man sitting in the front passenger seat suffered minor injuries, police said.

The BMW did not have license plates and Omar allegedly ran off after the accident, officials said.

It was unclear if Omar will face additional charges.
