Gareth Southgate
has decided to step down from his position as the manager of the
England national football team
. The announcement came on Tuesday, following England's defeat against
Spain
in the
European Championship final
.
This marked the second consecutive time the team had reached the final of the European tournament but failed to secure the title.
Southgate's tenure as
England
manager began in 2016, during which he led the team in 102 matches.
Under his guidance, England achieved notable successes, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and making it to the finals of the European Championship in both 2021 and 2024.
In the recent final against Spain on Sunday, England suffered a narrow 2-1 loss. Following the match, Southgate indicated that he would take time to consider his future as the national team's manager.
"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all," Reuters quoted Southgate as saying in a statement.
"But it's time for change and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.
"I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways."
Since Southgate assumed the managerial role in 2016, the England national team has undergone a remarkable transformation, establishing themselves as a formidable presence in international tournaments. Despite their solitary World Cup triumph in 1966, Southgate's leadership has propelled the side to new heights.
Under Southgate's guidance, England showcased their prowess by reaching the final of the European Championship in 2021, where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Italy in a penalty shootout.
The following year, they continued their impressive form, advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
