EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (PIX11) --- A man who allegedly stabbed his mother to death in her Brooklyn home after her poodle bit him tried to kill himself, police said.
The 36-year-old man stabbed his mother, Donna Hyman, 55 times, including 26 times in the head, and the dog, Gigi, nine times in the victim's apartment on Hornwell Lopp in East New York at 3 p.m. Friday, according to the NYPD.
Authorities said the suspect suffers from mental illness that was triggered when the dog bit him in the thigh. He allegedly threw the poodle off the balcony and stabbed himself multiple times in the chest, police said.
Hyman died at the hospital and the suspect is still in the ICU, police said. The suspect was transitioning to a woman, according to police.
A neighbor told PIX11 News that Hyman’s son was seen shirtless and bleeding before paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital in critical condition
“Not only was he handsome. He was charming. I do not think anybody had an idea. Something went wrong, and it was probably in the making,” said a neighbor who wants to remain anonymous.
A law enforcement source says there is no history of domestic disputes at the apartment.
