NEW YORK (PIX11) – A snow alert has been issued for New York City ahead of a storm that may drop 5 to 8 inches of snow on Tuesday, city officials said.
The New York City Department of Sanitation issued the snow alert beginning Tuesday at 3 a.m. through 7 p.m. that evening.
The precipitation is expected to start as rain Monday night, then change to a rain-snow mix around 4 a.m. before turning to all snow around 7 a.m., according to city officials.
Department of Sanitation workers will be salting streets, highways and bike lanes in New York City. Snowplows will be ready to start plowing as soon as accumulations hit 2 inches or more.
While the city will handle clearing streets and bike lanes, property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks in front of their properties or risk getting a ticket.
If the snow stops falling between:
- 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within four hours
- 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 14 hours
- 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., property owners must clear sidewalks by 11 a.m.
Alternate side parking regulations are canceled on Tuesday.
All branches of the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Public Library, and the Queens Public Library will be closed on Tuesday.
New York City public schools are moving to remote learning on Tuesday.
