GURGAON: A snatcher who was seriously injured after losing balance on his bike got prompt medical attention - courtesy the man whose cellphone he had stolen just moments before at IMT Manesar on Monday.

Snatcher falls off during getaway bid

The snatcher, a youngster, was critically injured and has been operated on.

He is yet to regain consciousness, police said on Tuesday.

The incident was reported at 6.10pm near Autotech Park in Sector 8.

Pramod Kumar (30), who works at an apparel and textile manufacturing company in IMT Manesar, said he was on his way home with a friend when they stopped to wait for others.

"While waiting, I got a call and was talking on the phone when a man on a Yamaha R15 approached from the direction of DRI Chowk and snatched my phone.

He sped towards KMP, but just around 200 metres ahead, he lost balance and the bike skidded, throwing him to the ground," Kumar said.

Kumar ran towards the biker and on seeing him unconscious, called the emergency number 112.

"I tried to ask his name, but he could not speak. He had injuries to his mouth and head. I checked the bag he had tied to his waist and found my mobile phone. I called the emergency number and police arrived soon after," Kumar said.

Police called an ambulance, which took him to a hospital.

SHO Devender Kumar of IMT Manesar police station said the snatcher appears to be in his mid-20s.

"He is critically injured and admitted to the government hospital in Sector 10 under police supervision. He had severe injuries on his head, mouth and nose, so doctors had to operate on him. There are wounds on his face, and we did not find any identity documents on him," SHO Kumar said.

Pramod filed a snatching complaint, based on which an FIR was registered under Section 379A (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The SHO said the snatcher's condition is still "unstable" and doctors believe he is unfit to give a statement right now.

"Apart from the complainant's phone, we recovered five more mobile phones from his possession. We are waiting for him to recover to gather the details of his previous thefts," the SHO added.

Asked about his first reaction, Pramod said the biker was severely injured and he couldn't even speak. "In such a situation, anyone would call emergency services," he added.

Snatching incidents aren't uncommon in the city. Last September, Gurgaon reported three snatching cases in three hours, including one in Manesar.

Bike-borne snatchers stole the mobile phone of a Kherki Daula resident who was on a stroll around 8pm.

The accused were later arrested.
