NEW DELHI: Former Indian all-rounder
Yusuf Pathan
shared an emotional message on social media after winning the
Lok Sabha elections 2024
from West Bengal's Baharampur constituency.
Despite being a star candidate in the
All India Trinamool Congress
' lineup, Pathan's victory was not assured, given that this was his first foray into electoral politics.
Defying all odds, Pathan triumphed over the seasoned five-time MP
Adhir Chowdhury
, a feat that eluded even the Left during its 34-year dominance in West Bengal.
On Thursday, Pathan shared an image of himself holding the certificate alongside his father and expressed his feelings on the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter).
The 41-year-old, known for his explosive batting in the
Indian cricket team
, has embarked on a new innings, this time in the realm of politics.
His recent victory in the 2024
Lok Sabha
elections has drawn parallels to his cricketing days, with Pathan himself equating the elation of winning to representing India on the cricket field.
"Standing with my Abba and the MP winning certificate. The joy and pride are similar to representing India in cricket. From sports to politics, my mission is to serve and develop our great nation. Abba is proud and delighted that I have this chance to make a difference," wrote Yusuf.
Pathan's victory was marked by a significant margin of 85,022 votes, demonstrating robust support from the constituency. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Pathan secured 5,24,516 votes.
His closest competitor, Congress candidate Ranjan, received 4,39,494 votes, while the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) candidate, Dr. Nirmal Kumar Saha, garnered 3,71,885 votes.
