'Shattered': Family of boy, 9, killed in Newark raising money for funeral

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) – The family of a 9-year-old boy shot and killed in Newark on Friday is raising funds for his funeral and mental health services for his siblings, according to GoFundMe.

Yasin Morrison, who was identified by his family, was struck by a bullet on Osborne Terrace around 5:30 p.m., prosecutors said. He was on his way to visit his grandmother, accompanied by his father and sisters, when he died, the GoFundMe page read.

"Our family is shattered beyond words, and we now face the heartbreaking reality of saying goodbye to our sweet boy," his family said in a statement posted to GoFundMe.

Newark police are still searching for a suspect in the shooting. A $10,000 reward is being offered by the Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program for information that leads to an arrest.

“The killer should know — we are coming after you. We are not going to rest until we find you, so turn yourself in now,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement.

Yanis was described as a wonderful brother to his five siblings who loved "The Incredibles," "Toy Story" and chicken nuggets.

"As a non-verbal autistic child, he had a unique way of expressing love, bringing joy to everyone around him... his smile could brighten even the darkest days, and his presence filled our home with warmth," his family said.
