NEW DELHI: The
Chicago Bears
are closing in on a significant coaching addition as they work towards securing former Seahawks Offensive Coordinator
Shane Waldron
for the role of offensive coordinator, according to sources informed of the situation. NFL Network Insider
Tom Pelissero
reported the development on Monday, signaling a potential key hire for the Bears.
Shane Waldron, 44, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the
Seattle Seahawks
. Before his stint in Seattle, Waldron served under
Sean McVay
in Los Angeles, where he progressed from tight ends coach in 2017 to passing game coordinator before joining the division rivals in 2021.
The move to bring Waldron to Chicago comes after the Bears decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy following a disappointing season for the offense. Getsy, who lacked pro play-calling experience and previously worked under
Matt LaFleur
in Green Bay, faced challenges in steering the Bears' offense, resulting in inconsistencies and puzzling designs.
Waldron's hiring is a significant move for Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, providing the team with an experienced and creative play-caller. Known for his ability to blend the run and pass, Waldron worked under
Pete Carroll
and played a role in quarterback Geno Smith's successful 2022 Pro Bowl campaign.
During the 2023 season with the Seahawks, Waldron's offense averaged 21.4 points per game and 322.9 yards per game. General manager Ryan Poles faces decisions regarding whether to use the No. 1 overall pick on a new quarterback, potentially Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, or to trade the pick and stick with Justin Fields.
While Waldron's hiring doesn't necessarily provide a clear indication of the Bears' direction, his proven ability to work effectively with multiple quarterbacks in his tenure in Los Angeles and Seattle makes it a promising addition for the franchise, irrespective of the chosen path by the front office.
