WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) – City officials are asking New Yorkers to stay away from the Hudson River because partially treated sewage has leaked into surrounding water, Westchester County officials said Friday afternoon.

“Until the repair is completed, up to one million gallons of partially treated sewage is expected to be released into the Hudson River,” officials said in a statement. “Contact with the sewage is a potential public health threat, so through the weekend and until further notice, residents are advised to avoid recreational activities in the Hudson River, from Peekskill to Yonkers.”

Currently, a significant amount of partially treated sewage is leaking into Yonkers. The water can carry the contamination upstream or down south below Yonkers, depending on the tides.

The Hudson flows southward through the Hudson Valley and between New York City and Jersey City, eventually draining into the Atlantic Ocean.

A contractor is currently working on-site to repair a broken pipe. The duration of how long it might take crews to finish repairs is unknown, city officials said.
