See it: Snow falls in NYC on the first day of winter

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Snow blanketed New York City on Saturday morning, fitting for the first official day of winter.

Light snow is expected to continue throughout the morning with an accumulation of about one inch before tapering off just before midday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters issued a hazardous weather outlook for northeastern New Jersey and southeastern New York. A warning from NotifyNYC told motorists to drive slowly and use caution while traveling.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-20s to lower 30s throughout Saturday. Wind chills are expected to fall to 19 in the boroughs, 22 on Long Island, and 15 in New Jersey.

By 7 a.m. Central Park had about 1.8 inches of snow while LaGuardia had about 2 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Islip also had about 1.9 inches of snow while Newark, New Jersey saw about 2.2 inches of accumulation.

Sunday is expected to have dangerous wind chills in the single digits with a high of 26 degrees. Temperatures will rise slightly on Monday to 29 degrees before going up to 36 degrees on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Day will have comfortable temperatures around 40 degrees with lots of sun and a high of 41 degrees on Thursday.
