RANDALL’S ISLAND (PIX11) – A 24-year-old man was stabbed in the neck outside the migrant shelter on Randall's Island, according to police.
The stabbing happened around 3:30 p.m. Thursday following a large fight.
Police said the man was transported to Harlem Hospital and is expected to survive.
A source told PIX11 News the victim was working as a security guard at the shelter and was confronted outside.
A total of eighteen people were taken into custody following the incident, including the alleged stabber, and charges are pending.
On Jan. 6, a 24-year-old migrant was stabbed to death on the food line inside the shelter. A 27-year-old asylum seeker was arrested and charged with murder.
After the deadly stabbing, Mayor Eric Adams spoke out about the violence.
"The team was already looking at bringing metal detectors into the shelters, and that is part of our goal, public safety. We're going to utilize visual technology, we're going to put cameras in many of the sites and locations," Adams said.
On Thursday night, a spokesperson for City Hall said in a statement to PIX11 News:
"The NYPD is currently investigating a reported incident near our Randall’s Island emergency shelter site. Violence will not be tolerated, and any illegality will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
There are currently no metal detectors at the Randall's Island facility, and it is not one of the shelters that currently has a curfew.
"The shelter site has always had cameras. We are in the process of installing more," the mayor's office said.
