NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- Neighbors in Irvington are breathing a sigh of relief after the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with two assaults that occurred in the city on Monday, June 3rd.
Caream Davis, 46, of Irvington was arrested late Wednesday night in Richmond, Virginia by members of the US Marshals Service.
Davis is being held in Virginia pending extradition to New Jersey. He faces several charges, including First Degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, First Degree Attempted Murder, and First Degree Kidnapping.
One of the victims was an 11-year-old boy, sexually assaulted Monday morning just steps from his home while walking his dog before school.
The second victim, an Irvington woman, spoke exclusively with PIX11 News Thursday about her attack.
The woman, who only wished to be identified as ‘Evelyn,’ said the attack happened around 6:30 a.m. Monday morning while she was walking her two dogs. Evelyn said the suspect passed her on the sidewalk and made eye contact before coming from behind and punching her in the head.
“I thought my life was gonna be over,” said Evelyn. “Because all I saw was blood all over my eyes and my face. He just kept punching me and punching me, trying to take my pants off. I just thought my life was gonna be gone.”
Evelyn said her attacker never said a word, but she made all the noise she could until he backed away.
“My dogs were barking and I was screaming for my life,” said Evelyn. “I was screaming ‘Help, help, help me! Somebody help me!’ And I don’t know if he got scared, but he stopped and walked away.
Evelyn said she immediately called 9-1-1 and described the suspect as a man with long dreadlocks. Police took a report, and she said a detective called her late Wednesday night. “They called me yesterday to let me know they got him,” said Evelyn.
The suspect’s arrest is a relief to victims and neighbors, but the trauma leaves a permanent mark. “Every time I walk, I look behind me,” said Evelyn. “I look behind me. I look sideways. I look every way. And that’s what everybody should do now.”
PIX11 News reached out to Irvington Police for comment as to why residents were not alerted to the attacks on Monday but have not yet received a response.
