A senior officer of the Bengal Police has alleged that the Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) declined to provide a statement to him on Wednesday regarding Sandeskhali incident which took place on January 5.

While leaving the probe agency’s CGO office on Wednesday, DSP Sananda Goswami informed reporters, “We came here to record the statement of the complainant. However, he declined to provide his statement. We have sent notices to agency officials three times."

Goswami further mentioned that the Bengal police had also visited the ED office on Sunday but were unable to record the statement of the ED officer.

"This is the second time we are visiting the office, but the complainant somehow is not available. We were informed that he is otherwise occupied. Our intention was to record the statement of the Enforcement Directorate Deputy Director, who is the complainant in this case," he said.

The Bengal police registered three FIRs on January 7 concerning the Sandeskhali incident independently.

On January 5, several Enforcement Directorate members were injured in North 24 Parganas' Sandeshkhali district. While accompanied by paramilitary forces, they were attacked by supporters of Trinamool Congress MLA Shah Jahan Sheikh.

The probe team had arrived to conduct raids related to an alleged ration distribution scam. The mob also vandalised government officials' vehicles.

On January 9, the BJP filed a petition with the Calcutta High Court, urging investigations by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Additionally, they demanded the immediate arrest of Shah Jahan Sheikh, a local leader in Sadeskhali.

The Calcutta High Court's division bench accepted the petition but dismissed the plea for an urgent hearing requested by BJP counsel Sushmita Saha Dutta. The court scheduled the hearing for January 11.
