Saint Vitus Bar faces closure after DOB raid, leaving future unclear

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Brooklyn's beloved music venue, Saint Vitus Bar, was abruptly shut down by the Department of Buildings (DOB) during a show on Friday evening.

This left fans disappointed and the future of the iconic venue uncertain.

The closure came after the DOB received over a dozen public complaints, prompting them to send inspectors to the venue. Upon arrival, they found approximately 250 people gathered on the first floor, operating as an "illegal eating and drinking establishment.

The issue? Saint Vitus' certificate of occupancy only permits the space for a commercial store and machinery storage.

This isn't the first time Saint Vitus has faced issues with the DOB. A similar violation was issued in July 2023, but the owner reportedly failed to address it. Consequently, the recent raid resulted in another violation and the venue's closure.

Despite the closure, hope remains.

Councilman Keith Powers has stepped in, stating his support for the bar's reopening and acknowledging its importance to the community.

"Anyone who's been there knows it's a safe and comfortable space," Powers said, "but they have to make sure they get the approvals for that."

While the bar works towards acquiring the necessary permits, Saint Vitus has posted on social media about "relocating" and hosting shows at different venues. This temporary solution allows fans to enjoy the music scene still while the bar navigates its legal hurdles.
