NEW DELHI: The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team will have an iconic supporter in the stands during their highly anticipated
T20 World Cup
match against Pakistan on June 9 in New York. Cricket legend
Sachin Tendulkar
is expected to be present at the
Nassau County ground
, lending his support to Team India.
According to a source close to the ICC, Tendulkar, 51, will attend the match as part of his association with a key sponsor of the global body.
The Nassau County ground, located on the outskirts of New York, is anticipated to be filled to capacity for this marquee event.
"Yes, if all goes well, Sachin will be watching the match in New York and cheering the Indian team," a source working closely with the ICC told PTI on condition of anonymity. "It is still not known if he would meet the players prior to the game or not, but his mere presence in the stands will certainly be a morale booster for
Rohit Sharma
and his men in what will be the most important group league assignment."
Tendulkar, widely regarded as the greatest Indian cricketer, still holds the top spot for run-scoring in both Test and ODI formats. He has participated in six 50-over World Cups from 1992 to 2011 and served as the ICC's 'Brand Ambassador' during the 2015 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The presence of Tendulkar is expected to inspire the Indian team as they prepare for one of their toughest group stage challenges. This clash is part of a broader campaign in which India will face other teams like hosts USA, Ireland, and Canada in the group stage. The Indian team has already started their preparations in New York, having traveled in batches and held their first training sessions.
