RTA office recovered 90 lakh from tax defaulters

LUDHIANA: Acting on the

financial irregularities

highlighted in the

audit report

, the office of Regional Transport Authority Ludhiana has

recovered

pending dues amounting to Rs 90 from the owners of defaulter commercial vehicles.
Officials said that with the connivance of insiders, owners of various commercial vehicles had managed to dodge the department to get fitness certificates of vehicles without clearing pending taxes, penalties and interest on them. Besides, there were other violations too which caused loss to the state exchequer.
An official, pleading anonymity said all these irregularities were reported before implementation of e-governance in the Punjab transport. The department has been offering online services since 2018.
RTA Ludhiana Randeep Singh said, “An audit in the past highlighted the financial irregularities reported between 2015 to 2018. Acting on these findings, we have recovered Rs 90 lakh in the past three months and will intensify the drive to recover more pending dues.”
