A Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) stoked a row after a viral video showed her thrashing a youth president of her party.
The video, which was widely shared on social media, shows Sunanda Sarkar, councillor of Ward Number 18, slapping Kedar Das, who is TMC's youth president of the ward.
Sunanda Sarkar slapped Kedar after he allegedly accused her of being involved in several extortion cases.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called the incident "unfortunate" and said, "Senior leaders and public representatives should be more careful. This is ridiculous."
The BJP called it an "internal rot" and said, "Political turmoil in Bengal reveals its internal rot!"
"Corruption allegations against Sarkar tarnish TMC's already battered credibility, amid accusations of extortion within the party ranks. TMC's demand to apprehend their own councillor and associates at Battala PS underscores their deep-seated crisis," the party said in a post on X.
CPI(M) West Bengal State Secretary Mohammed Salim condemned the incident and termed the incident as "street justice".
