India captain Rohit Sharma became the 4th batter to score 4000 runs in Men’s T20Is during the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Ireland on Wednesday, June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Babar Azam and Virat Kohli are the other batters to have reached the landmark in men’s cricket. New Zealand’s Suzie Bates is the only one in the Women’s T20Is to have achieved the feat.
IND vs IRE, T20 World Cup Updates
Rohit got there after India were asked to chase down 97. He played his shots freely in the powerplay, taking the attack to Joshua Little in the second over of India's run-chase, hitting the pacer for a four followed by a six. He also rode his luck after Andrew Balbirnie dropped him when he was batting on 6. The 37-year-old Rohit is also level with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell in the list of most hundreds in Men’s T20Is (5).
Rohit Sharma looking to return to his best
Rohit wasn’t in the best of form coming into the World Cup after he failed to score enough runs for MI in the second-half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He scored a hundred against Ruturaj Gaikwad’s CSK, but could not carry his momentum. With Rohit not in form, MI also could not go through to the playoffs.
In India’s warm-up match against Bangladesh on June 1 in New York, Rohit scored 23 runs off 19 balls with 2 fours and 1 six before Mahmudullah Riyad accounted for his wicket.
