NEW YORK (PIX11) --- An inmate died in a cell at Rikers Island on Friday night, making it the second death at the troubled jail this year, officials said.

Manuel Luna, 30, was found dead unresponsive in his cell in the George R. Vierno Center at 8:47 p.m., according to the Department of Correction. Medical personnel were unable to save Luna before he was pronounced dead.

“On behalf of the New York City Department of Correction, we extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. We are conducting a full investigation into this tragic event,” Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie said.

The investigation is ongoing.

On Jan. 4, Chima Williams, 43, died while playing basketball at Eric M. Taylor Center on Rikers Island. Williams collapsed at around 9:45 a.m. and medics rushed to save him before he was pronounced dead, officials said.

On Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams said violence in New York City jails has decreased.

"Our jails are safer," Adams said.
