NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York City commuters want all the help they can get to plan their rides. Sunny Ng, a software developer in the city and a regular rider, created a new transit app using code and a unique algorithm.
Ng met PIX11 News at Union Square to highlight some of the features.
"The Weekendest" is available for free in the Apple App Store and online. Ng told PIX11 News he is currently working on bringing a version of the app to Android users.
Ng called it the "first-ever real-time New York City Subway map." It displays train locations and provides information about travel times.
Ng said that riders have been using the app to decide on the best routes because it helps them see travel time and transfers.
"The primary use is for the next train. If I travel at night, it could be a 15 or 20-minute wait. Is it worth transferring or going to something else?" he asked.
The MTA redesigned its subway and bus map during the previous year and released a new version in March 2024.
The agency has pointed to its Train Time app for the LIRR and Metro-North as an example of its goals. That app allows ticket purchases and also provides information.
Ng said the Weekendest provides a visual representation of information.
Social media and discussion threads have helped increase the popularity of The Weekendest app.
