JERSEY CITY, N.J. (PIX11) – For the first time in decades, people can regularly visit and walk around Reservoir No. 3 in The Heights neighborhood of Jersey City.
The area is located between Central and Summit avenues at Jefferson Avenue by Pershing Field Park.
It's open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Mayor Steven Fulop joined members from the City Council, Department of Infrastructure, Jersey City Parks Coalition, Reservoir Alliance, and the community for a walk along the new path.
The city led a comprehensive construction project to preserve and upgrade the historic area.
“After three decades of little action, the 14-acre site has been revived at the community’s request, enhancing public accessibility and safety while preserving the reservoir's unique historical significance,” the Fulop administration wrote in a news release.
It was built in the 1870s to serve the area’s water supply. It’s listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
The nearly mile-long circular path will remain open during the next phases of work along the water’s edge.
