NEW YORK (PIX11) – Republican candidate for Senate Mike Sapraicone has a message for his challenger, longtime New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand: "Wake up.”
In an interview with Nexstar at the GOP Convention, Sapraicone taunted that Gillibrand has been “missing in action” since she ended her presidential run in 2020.
“I think she’s gonna have to wake up pretty soon,” Sapraicone said. “She hasn’t been around anyway; why should she suddenly be around now?”
The former NYPD detective accused Gillibrand of politically flip-flopping, referring to her position on gun control.
“I think it’s our time,” Sapraicone said. “I think it’s my time… you feel it in the air when you talk to people.”
Evan Lukaske, a spokesperson for Gillibrand, provided the following statement in response.
"Senator Gillibrand traveled to all 62 counties last year and looks forward to highlighting her strong record of accomplishments for New York families, including passing bipartisan anti-gun trafficking legislation and delivering health benefits to veterans and 9/11 first responders. Her record contrasts sharply with MAGA Mike Sapraicone, who shares former President Trump's extreme views on reproductive rights and has said he's open to a seven-week abortion ban."
Gillibrand spokesman Evan LukaskeSapraicone also aimed ire at New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. The Queens native criticized Hochul’s controversial decision to pause congestion pricing as a poor, “politically driven” move that wasted tax dollars.
All eyes were on the Republican National Conference this week, which kicked off just a day after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Trump showed up at the Milwaukee conference with a bandaged ear and announced JD Vance as his running mate in the 2024 presidential election.
