NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- City officials are urging New Yorkers to report any new cracks in buildings after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the tri-state area on Friday.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, officials said. The earthquake’s epicenter was 3.7 miles southeast of Califon, New Jersey, according to the USGS.
The city's Department of Buildings is asking residents to call 311 to report non-compliant conditions or 911 to report emergencies at construction sites or buildings, the agency said.
"New Yorkers, we at the Department of Buildings are concerned about some of the downstream possibilities cracks that you might see that may materialize the manifest in a week or a month," said Department of Buildings Commissioner James Oddo.
The department will be sending out extra engineering and inspection staff over the weekend, to check for any reported building damage and conduct spot inspections of random construction sites.
“This is a time for that tried and true saying ‘if you see something, say something,’” he said. “If you see something that is problematic, please call 311.”
