NEW DELHI:
Rahul Gandhi
's car was pelted with stones in West Bengal's
Malda
on Wednesday morning as the
Congress leader
entered the state from Bihar for a second time with his "
Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra
." The car's rear window pane was smashed. However, Rahul did not sustain any injuries and was seen walking out of the car after the attack.
The attack on Rahul Gandhi's car comes amid strain in ties between the Congress and
Mamata Banerjee
's ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal over failed seat-sharing efforts for the Lok Sabha elections.
Both the parties have openly targeted each other despite being allies in the anti-BJP bloc INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance).
Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, "Maybe someone from the crowd pelted a stone. This is a small incident but something could have happened too..."
Mamata Banerjee is also in Malda today with her 'Jonosanjog Yatra'. In her speech in Malda, Mamata took a dig at the Congress and said "I rarely come for politics but there are some parties which start chirping like cuckoos at the time of elections ... Our fight with the BJP will continue. We will fight alone. If anyone can defeat BJP, it is the Trinamool Congress."
Notably, both Malda and Murshidabad are considered to be strongholds of the Congress in West Bengal. With the break in her alliance with the Congress in the state, Mamata will go all out to defeat the grand old party in the region.
Earlier today, Rahul held a roadshow in Bihar's Katihar district after a night halt in the city.
