NEW DELHI: A court dealing with matters concerning
MPs and MLAs
in India has directed Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi
to appear before it on July 2. This order pertains to a
defamation case
filed against him for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The complaint, initially lodged by BJP leader
Vijay Mishra
in 2018, has been ongoing for several years.
The court session on Wednesday saw a plea from
Ram Pratap
, who sought to become a party in the case. However,
Santosh Kumar Pandey
, the lawyer representing the complainant, opposed this request. According to Pandey, Pratap is neither a victim nor connected to the matter in any significant way. Gandhi's lawyer,
Kashi Prasad Shukla
, also opposed Pratap's plea.
Despite these objections, the court dismissed the petition from Pratap and reiterated its call for Rahul Gandhi to make a personal appearance on the next hearing date.
Gandhi had previously attended court on February 20 this year, during his "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra" in Amethi, where he was granted bail.
