NEW DELHI: The
Indian women's badminton team
stunned the formidable Chinese squad with a thrilling 3-2 victory at the
Badminton Asia Team Championships
on Wednesday.
Star shuttler
PV Sindhu
marked her return from a four-month injury lay-off with a winning performance, leading India to an unexpected triumph over the top-seeded Chinese team.
Despite already securing a knock-out round berth due to the limited number of teams in Group W, India delivered a spectacular performance against their Chinese counterparts.
Sindhu, who had been sidelined since October last year following a knee injury at the French Open, showcased her prowess by defeating higher-ranked Han Yue with a scoreline of 21-17, 21-15 in just 40 minutes, giving India an early 1-0 lead in the tie.
Although India faced setbacks in the subsequent matches, with Tanisha Castro and Ashwini Ponappa, followed by Ashmita Chaliha, suffering defeats, the team rallied back.
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand leveled the score by securing a hard-fought victory in the women's doubles event against the Chinese duo.
The deciding match witnessed an exceptional performance from Anmol Kharb, who exceeded expectations by defeating the higher-ranked Wu Luo Yu with a scoreline of 22-20, 14-21, 21-18 in a grueling one hour and 17 minutes contest, securing a memorable win for India.
The Indian women's team's victory adds to the nation's growing reputation in
badminton
and serves as a testament to their talent and resilience on the international stage.
Meanwhile, the Indian men's team, which has previously achieved significant milestones in the sport, is set to face Hong Kong in their upcoming Group A league match.
